Yo it's pixel day today!

Which is awesome because I fucking love chiptune (and vgm style music) so much! While I didn't have much of a chance in my childhood to experience some of the awesome chips I hear now, I think I can still appreciate how much hard work goes into creating og chiptunes. (I have no fucking idea how to use a tracker lol)

People who make these on real hardware (cough newlife+ cough) are super talented (I wish I could be them).

But I would like to share my chips and vgm tunes that I have made over the years, along with a brand new one (kind of inspired by knuckle sandwhich)

Average4K is a game I am still working on (contrary to popular belief), and I made this song for it: Pixel Boss.

It's still one of my all time best songs I have made, a little rough around the edges (could have been mixed a lot better) but in all; it was a fantastic first step inside of chipstep (non-full chiptune).

While I have made other songs that could fall into chipstep, chiptune, or vgm before Pixel Boss. That was the first really good one in my opinion.

Pixel Disco (which I made before Pixel Boss but released later) is actually somehow a really good song even though at the time I thought it was awful. It's actually really good and I want to use it in a project sometime.

God's Gaze is what I would call the real first good chipstep song I have made, and it's a really good loop made in the style of Rain World. Very proud of it and you'll probably catch me listening to this way more times than I probably should. (yeah I listen to the music I make a lot, because I enjoy making music and I like making things that I like!)

Sometimes you find yourself in a probably toby fox inspired world looking for a store to buy some funny magical items and you get greeted with some fancy tunes with a cool epiano and you get welcome to my store. I think this one is really good, it's chords work well with the melody and while the bass is simple, it hits so good.

I DID make a song for pixel day, while I can't say it's my best. I do believe that it hits the feeling its supposed to. There's a Ghost is 100% inspired by Knuckle Sandwhich's ghost freezer section because that game was fucking awesome lol.

Go check it out if you haven't already, it's a fun listen.

That's it for me atm, I hope all of you are doin good and happy new year.

Hopefully you'll see an Average4K update from me in a bit, but only time will tell.

Thanks for readin.

hello my newgrounders

i'm here to talk about the end of the year, because did you know next month is December???

thats wild, and it kinda frightens me.

average4k

so I've been taking a break from average4k since august-ish, and I haven't touched it since. Hence why theres been no updates, but the goal is to start up a lot this summer (or close to it). I know, thats awhile away. But really for me, theres no rush to get the game out. It's a passion project, and right now I simply don't have any passion to give to it.

music

I've been practicing a lot, and getting a lot better at music production; i've released a lot of tracks this year, way more than last year. I'm pretty happy with what i've put out, as all of it is actually listenable. I've thrown away a whole lot of projects over the year, but I think i'll put out some bangers sometime soon next year.

(theres way more)

the future?

doin my own thing, and keepin on doin it. I'll help out people along the way, and help them create the games of their dreams; while I get more experience to do what I want to do. maybe even get a real game dev job in a company.

thanks for readin, peace out.

hey hey hey everybody, kade here. And today, it's time for another Average4K Ramble (after uhhh 7 months) in that time i've done a few things.

I remade the entire engine.

yep, everything was remade. an entire 2 years' worth of work remade in 7 months, that seems pretty okay.

we went from SDL + SDL Renderer (first test) -> SDL + OpenGL (b10-b13) -> GLFW + OpenGL (b14)

so we're actually using something that is quite capable. Not saying that SDL isn't, i'd just rather use GLFW.

whats new

iu_1021665_8519935.webp

iu_1021664_8519935.webp

(Shout out to sam for the chart, and obviously ardolf for the song lol.)

nothing really on the surface, but obviously a lot of underground changes. Some super obvious view changes are:

  • the scaling on everything is a lot nicer
  • the settings are better organized and they show tooltips to tell you what they do

a lot of backend changes are:

  • the entire game now runs all of the main menu stuff on lua (which allows you to customize the menu in any way you want!) It's skin based, so you can package these skins to everyone you know.

iu_1021669_8519935.png iu_1021667_8519935.png

I'm going to have to create documentation for this later, but for now the code is like half commented. Hopefully it'll get better over time, but it's pretty freeing to be able to easily test skin changes/menu code by opening the console and typing "reload"

iu_1021666_8519935.png

is that it?

Like I said, I have spent awhile on this because,

a.

i'm a lazy mf (and also half because of trying to get my life together lol)

b.

this shit is hard!!! i'm not an engine programmer, and i've been learning cpp while making this game. I still find out crap that I never even knew about on the daily.

iu_1021668_8519935.png

yet again, the engine is really well put together and is very object orientated which is what I like about it. So I can now start putting out more stuff, well. More frequently lol.

music

if you didn't know, we're making an entire ost for the game's initial pack. It's going to have around 8 songs and 6 of them are already done!!

featuring, longestsoloever, seberster, tictacto, ardolf, me, and more.

huuuugeee thank you too all of the people spending their time helping me out by creating bangers. they're all amazing and super kind.

closing remarks

sorry it took so long to make this, i'm an extreme slacker.

thank you for reading, i'll cya next time.

bye bye.

hey!

welcome back to average4k ramblings I know i haven't said much in a bit, but that's because I was busy working!!!

we're basically rewriting a bunch of stuff to be able to be built on easier, as the previous itteration of the engine SUCKED. My testers have been getting sick of me rewriting features so I am rewriting the whole ass game.

oops

(join our discord btw, for cool shit. we got a minecraft server now!!

discord)

Anyways, how's that going? (pretty good if I say so myself)

I went crazy on creating a better logging system with a GOOD console, allowing me to develop stuff way faster.

iu_905023_8519935.webp

ImGUI is a must have for indie game dev's, it allows you to create UI that looks good SUPER FAST!! with minimal code, and banger support.

very amazing stuff, check them out here

alright though what else have I been doing, well pretty much the game's base engine is now done. Named "AvgEngine" because I am great at naming, it's a 2d engine (maybe 3d in the future) built on GLFW and OpenGL.

The previous iteration was on SDL, and SUCKED. Well, SDL doesn't suck. It's just not what I want currently, and the event system it was using was slowing me down so I decided to remake it. With that I said, fuck it. GLFW time, because why not.

I dont think theres really anything terrible about SDL, it's a great tool. I just think GLFW might be better for me.

code people part

are you a "code monkey" like I am? do you wanna know how this shit works.

well please tell me I dont know.

im joking but here is the new project structure.

iu_905022_8519935.png

lot cleaner than before, and most of this is overridable oop stuff, so c users look away while you still can!

The actual game is also included in this, with all the rhythm elements and stuff there as well.

iu_905024_8519935.png

It's really nice because since a lot of stuff is overridable, you can make a custom version of the "game" class to make the original class way cleaner. We only add stuff we want and keep the stuff we need!

iu_905025_8519935.png

I really like this, and yes i've actually be unironically using namespaces. insane developments.

fonts?????

ok ok I wanted to create better fonts for SO LONG!!!

I hate SDL_TTF, which is what we were using. I decided to create my own font implementation by using BMFONT!!! (stands for bitmap font lol) BMFont - AngelCode.com

BMFont is a program that can generate XML shit for the fonts, and create FONT TEXTURE MAPS!!! which means all the fonts are stored as files.

You can't use TTF files anymore which means you can create malicious ones. MEANING YOU CAN SKIN fonts.

woohoo!! But slow down your horses as there's obviously caveats.

n1

bro this shit scales like CRAP.

obviously scaling downwards is fine, you can always take pixels and compress them to a reasonable size. If you get low enough it will look bad, but as long as you don't. It's good. Scaling upwards is a lot harder though, and can lead to text that looks like crap.

Solution: make original text BIG.

The default size for all the font maps are 128px for the text size, and yes I know you might be thinking. big? big IMAGES!

That's actually not true, believe it or not. White and transparent images don't actually take up much space. it's crazy.

n2

this just looks unintuitiveiu_905026_8519935.png

While true, it's very simple and I have a tutorial explaining this (located https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2E9EYkkxQA there)

It should be easy to follow, and for people to create fonts, and package them with skins or modcharts!

hi thats the end

thank you for reading. I love you <3

hopefully more updates soon.

I love music. music is so awesome.

released some new tunes, more to come.

Got pixel boss' instrumental up there, go check it out. it's pretty good.

Also updated the original with it's master.

Been playing around with chord theory and stuff in this one, turned out super good.

hope you all are doing well, and hopefully I get to post some average4k stuff on here soon. cuz I got a lot cooking.

Hello so I am starting this new thing on here where I go into detail on what I am doing with average4k.

It's been really rough trying to develop this game cuz I think I might have some sort of ADHD when trying to start on my projects. Don't cite me on that, I am not a doctor and I need to get that checked out eventually.

But it's been really hard. I still am getting work done and I will go over that here.

First things first, mines!

You hit it; it blows up. Deducts accuracy points. You don't, nothing happens.

iu_801545_8519935.gif

The sprite rotates upwards towards the receptors and yes the explosion is from deltarune lol. So is the sound effect.

I might change it eventually to something else but right now its funny.

I also added Fakes which are also from stepmania, they're notes that cannot be hit and do nothing other than exist. They're kinda there just for accents and stuff that you aren't supposed to hit.

iu_801546_8519935.gif

I've also been working on some modchart stuff for multiple playfields but that still isn't really done yet.

Other than that, I am working on general misc stuff.

Mostly plans for the future. I really like to think Average4K as a Rhythm Game Emulator. I like thinking of it this way because it lets me give the players what they want. If you want the game to feel like quaver, etterna, project outfox, stepmania, notitg, or osu!mania. Go ahead, you can make it that way! I added modcharts for this reason. I am going to add custom hit judgements for that reason. I am going to add so much stuff that lets you customize how the game is played, and hopefully work on everything so hard that it because super stable and fun to play.

The ultimate 4k rhythm game. Even though I say that I don't know if I am qualified to even say that. I am not very good at the game, and well I think a lot of people outside of my community don't like me lol.

Either way I think I am just going continue doing what I am doing. This is still great practice for me to eventually become a fulltime game developer.

I like documenting my thoughts, and this is a great place for it.

Thanks for reading,

until next time.
